Frequently Asked Questions
What can Flipleaf be used for?
In short - to publish any document, brochure, newsletter, magazine, newspaper, portfolio, catalogue, manual, prospectus, manuscript, journal, comic, report etc.
How do Flipleaf Credits Work?
This is fairly straightforward. Once you have opened a Flipleaf Account you will receive 100 free credits. Further credits can be purchased on the "Purchase Credits" screen. One credit is required for each page in your publication.
One year free hosting is included for each publication created by you. If you wish to leave the publication online beyond 12 months, subsequent hosting is charged at 1 credit per 10 pages per annum (or part thereof).
As a standard, the Flipleaf logo appears on the toolbar of your publication. This helps us to spread the word about the service we offer. We appreciate that certain publishers may wish to remove the logo from the toolbar. Removal of the Flipleaf logo costs 20 credits per publication.
Flipleaf credits cost from as little as 0.60 euros each. You can purchase 50 credits for 60 euro; 100 credits for 100 euro; 500 credits for 400 euro or 1000 credits for 600 euro. If you intend to publish in large volumes, please contact us for bulk purchases.
I’d like to create a Flipleaf Publication, what do I do?
It’s fairly simple - follow the Steps Below!
- Open a Flipleaf account (see next question for guidance).
- Click “Publications” on the top menu bar -> “New Publication” and enter your Publication Name & Category.
- Click “View, amend or create an issue” -> “New Issue”, locate your PDF file and click “Send PDF”.
- Wait until your upload has completed (the Progress Bar will indicate how much time you need to wait).
- When your file is uploaded, Flipleaf will automatically process and display a draft of your publication on screen.
- Examine the draft in detail and, if you are happy with it, click “Publish and Pay”, you will then be asked to enter keywords/description for this issue.
- One credit will be deducted from your account for each page and you will be displayed with the address (URL) of final publication.
I’m about to open a Flipleaf account, can you provide me with some guidance?
Of course. Opening a Flipleaf account is a very straightforward process. Simply click on the “Publisher” link on the home page and click “Sign Up Now”. There is some information that we require (Username, Password, First Name, Surname, Country and E-mail Address).
IMPORTANT - before choosing a Username, please be aware that the username you choose will be used in the URL of your publications. The URL will be constructed as follows:
www.flipleaf.com/username/publicationname/issuenameornumber
So, for example Issue “3” of “flip” Magazine uploaded by “superuser” will be published to the following address:
www.flipleaf.com/superuser/flip/3
All of Superuser’s publications will be visable at www.flipleaf.com/superuser and all "flip" magazines uploaded by Superuser will be visible at www.flipeaf.com/superuser/flip
I’d like to create a Publication using Flipleaf but the file that I would like to upload is not in PDF format, what will I do?
Don’t worry! You have two options. You can download and install a program that will help you to convert your files to PDF’s (Try http://www.cutepdf.com or http://www.eprintdriver.com). Alternatively, if you have opened a Flipleaf account, you can e-mail the file to us and we will convert and upload it for you at no extra cost.
I already display my Publications online in normal PDF format, why should I publish them as a Flipbook?
Flipbooks are probably not for everyone. For example a visually strong, high circulation document will benefit more from Flipleaf than a text heavy, visually-challenged document with low readership. The many benefits of using Flipleaf are outlined below, you can gauge whether they apply to your publication:
- Display your graphically designed publications the way they were intended to be seen.
- Publish immediately without having to engage your web developer.
- Reach a wider audience by displaying your publication with Flipleaf, as considerably more of the world’s PC’s are equipped to view Flash (used by Flipleaf) than PDFs. As such, you remove the requirement for your readers to download and install a PDF Reader.
- Viewable in standard web browsers - no special plug-ins or added steps needed.
- Access stats on the number of Readers that view each of your publications.
- If you don’t already have a website:
- We will provide you with a sub-domain name (www.Flipleaf.com/username) at which all of your publications will be displayed. If you own a website, you have the choice to link it to your Flipleaf sub-site or to embed your Flipleaf sub-site within your site.
- Your readers can easily navigate through your publication (they simply click on the corners or drag and drop the page).
- Every word in the document is indexed and searchable, allowing for quick and easy sourcing of information using Flipleaf’s search facility.
- Your entire publication (every word!) will be equipped to be indexed by all of the major search engines (Google, Yahoo etc).
- Flipleaf is an environmentally friendly solution - lower your printing costs while exposing your publication to a wider audience.
- Your readers can:
- Browse and Read your Publication.
- Zoom in for greater detail.
- Send a link to a friend.
- Search for a word or phrase in your publication.
- Browse the index of your publication (thumbnails of each page).
I like Flipleaf, but I would really like it if it did this. Can you add the following functionality?
We’re constantly updating and improving the Flipleaf service. If you have any improvements/extra functionality that you would like added, please let us know. If you are the first to suggest a modification that we go on to implement, we will reward you with free credits!
Improvements in the pipeline include:
Ability for publishers to create hotspots in their publication from which they can create an external link to another webpage. For example a link from an advert to the advertisers website!
Hardback page turn - so that the front and back pages of a hardback book will turn realistically.
User defined background colour (so that the Flipbook will blend more seamlessly if embedded in your site).
I’d like to provide my graphic designer with details of the PDF file required to upload to Flipleaf. Can you provide me with some pointers?
Sure! There are a few problems that are frequently encountered here.
Sometimes designers/printers provide our users with very large files that are intended for use by printers for high resolution print jobs. These are typically rejected by our servers. Please ask your designer/printer for a lower resolution (96 DPI) version of your publication. Typically a 100 page publication should not be greater than 10 megabytes.
Also, you’ll need to make sure that your PDF file is properly cropped – that none of those strange bleed/print marks (the ones that define the extremities of each page) are displayed. If you’re wondering what we’re on about here, it’s unlikely to pose a problem for you – it’s one of those things that’s difficult to explain but will be clear to you if it applies to you!
Finally, please ensure that all pages in the PDF document are equal in dimension and layout (eg all pages are “A4 and landscape” or “A3 and portrait”); that the front page of your publication is the first page of the PDF and that the last page of your publication is the last page of your PDF. This sounds a little obvious, but it’s not uncommon for designers to supply the front/back cover in a separate PDF!
